Practical Information

Best time to visit

The sun shines most frequently in Indonesia between May and October — the dry season. This is the best time to travel: rice fields turn emerald green, skies are clear, and the seas are calm enough for boat trips between islands.

Time difference

While the day has just begun in the Netherlands, the sun is often high in the sky in Indonesia. The time difference ranges from 5 to 7 hours later, depending on where you are – Java, Bali, or further east.

Currency

The Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) is the official currency, and cash remains king — especially in villages and on islands where ATMs are scarce. In cities, card payments are usually possible. To travel completely worry-free, you can exchange some money in the Netherlands beforehand. Contactless payment is not the norm, especially in less touristy areas.

Visa for Indonesia

You need a visa for Indonesia – usually the so-called 'Visa on Arrival' (VoA). Since 2025, you can conveniently apply online via the official Indonesian immigration website. This saves you a lot of time upon arrival, allowing you to skip long queues at the visa counter.

The process feels a bit like booking a flight – calm and step by step. Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months after arrival and keep your flight details handy.

Visa for Indonesia

  1. Go to evisa.imigrasi.go.id and choose Apply.
  2. Enter the reason for your visit – for a holiday, choose General, Family, or Social.
  3. For the sub-reason, choose Tourism, Family visit, and Transit.
  4. Select B1 – Tourist visa for stays up to 30 days.
  5. Fill in your details, upload your passport and a clear passport photo.
  6. Pay the visa fee (approximately 500,000 IDR, ±30 euros) by credit card.
  7. After approval, you will receive the e-visa by email — print it out or keep it digitally.

Upon arrival, show the e-visa along with your passport at the immigration desk. Within a few minutes you'll be outside — ready for your adventure. ✈️
